ABOUT

Our Roots

Project Battambang was founded in 2010 by five Year 2 medical students under the mentorship of Dr Ong Yew Jin. What began as a small student-led initiative in Poipet has since grown into a long-standing overseas community involvement project committed to healthcare, education and community engagement in Cambodia.

For over a decade, Project Battambang has worked alongside local partners, healthcare professionals and Cambodian student volunteers to support communities in Poipet. Our work has included health screenings, health education, door-to-door groundwork, school engagement and the Light-A-Dream Scholarship, which supports students in continuing their education.

At the heart of Project Battambang is a belief in sustainable, locally grounded service. Beyond providing short-term support, we aim to listen closely, build lasting relationships and strengthen existing community systems. Our initiatives are shaped by the needs of the communities we serve and guided by our values of love, integrity, beneficence, respect, accountability and sustainability.

As Project Battambang enters a new phase, we continue to hold our roots in Poipet closely. Due to current safety concerns, our recent efforts have focused on groundwork in Phnom Penh and surrounding communities, where we are exploring new partnerships and future initiatives in consultation with our Cambodian counterparts and local stakeholders.

While the project’s direction may continue to evolve, our purpose remains the same: to serve with humility, learn from the communities we meet, and work towards better health, education and opportunity together.

Our Programmes

Education & Outreach

Project Battambang stands by the wholehearted belief that education is a lifelong process, and a major cornerstone of improving universal standards of living. Quality education enables individuals to acquire the knowledge and proficiencies needed for higher-skilled occupations that provide better income and self-sufficiency. We aim to deliver sustainable, year-round aid through 3 main initiatives, namely:

  1. Light-A-Dream Scholarship (LADS) camp

  2. Student engagement

  3. Teachers' training

  4. Post-screening health Education

Health Screening

Project Battambang’s health screening initiatives aim to make basic healthcare more accessible to the communities we serve. Over the years, our team has conducted mass village screenings and door-to-door screenings in Poipet, providing villagers with basic medical care, health education and referrals where needed.

In December 2024, Project Battambang conducted annual health screenings at Mother of Peace Kindergarten, as well as in Tum Nub Kor Pram and Kbal Koh. Through these screenings, our team worked with doctors, healthcare workers and student volunteers to address a range of health concerns, including acute illnesses, chronic conditions and other medical needs.

As Project Battambang enters a new phase, we are preparing to conduct health screenings during our upcoming December trip. These screenings will be shaped by findings from our May 2026 recce, where we explored healthcare needs, referral pathways, pharmacy support and possible community partnerships in Phnom Penh and surrounding areas.

DOOR-TO-DOOR SurveyS

Door-to-door surveys are an important part of Project Battambang’s groundwork process. They allow us to listen directly to residents, understand community needs and gather insights before planning future initiatives.

In the past, these surveys were conducted alongside our screenings in Poipet to better understand villagers’ health-seeking behaviours, educational needs and daily challenges. In May 2026, as Project Battambang explored new communities beyond Poipet, we conducted door-to-door surveys in Stung Meanchey and Koh Dach Island.

Through these conversations, our team learnt more about residents’ healthcare concerns, education priorities, access to support systems and openness towards future initiatives. These findings will guide how Project Battambang plans future screenings, education programmes and community engagement efforts in a way that is locally grounded and responsive to actual needs.
